About Me
Hiya! Welcome to Scotland Birth and Baby. I am Shannon Stellhorn, and have many "hats" I wear as I am sure you do as well. I am wife to my amazing husband, Christopher, having our 20 year anniversary in May 2025. I am mother to 7 amazing children, all bringing different experiences and teaching me more and more each day. I first became a mother through adoption in 2007, before birthing my 6 biological children, birthing in a variety of settings from one in the hospital, two in birthing centres, and three born peacefully at home.
I have always had a fascination with pregnancy and birth since a young age. As a teenager growing up in the midwest of America, I realised that midwives still existed, and was excited at the prospect that I could maybe one day use a midwife for my care, as well as maybe be one!
In 2007, I began providing labour support for teenagers during their birthing journeys. Then I fell pregnant with my first baby after being told we would never have a baby of our own. I wanted to have the midwifery care and out of hospital birth experience. My first birth in 2008 was completely miraculous and magical. I had the most amazingly peaceful water birth that changed my life forever. I knew I would become a midwife.
I took my NARM exam in February 2012, and qualified as a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) and LM (Licensed Midwife) in the state of Texas in April 2012, where I continue to hold my qualifications. I owned A Sacred Journey Midwifery Services, PLLC for ten years, where I offered home birthing services, specialising in VBACs, first time mums, and supporting those with a trauma background, serving over 600 couples in their birthing times.
In my time in the Houston area, I not only served many families as their care provider, but I also trained over 100 doulas through my own doula training program, was an instructor and facilitator for the Antepartum 1 course with the Association of Texas Midwives Midwifery Training program, and assisted over ten apprentices in their journeys to become midwives. I took my IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) in May 2021, and hold that credentialing as well.
My family moved to Aberdeenshire in 2022, where I have since birthed two of my children here (2022 and 2024). Those experiences have driven my passion to further support couples in the childbearing years through private lactation support and as a facilitator of physiological birth as a birth keeper. I have both personally and professionally found the system is run on a one size fit all approach, and while I appreciate the NHS is overburdened and doing the best they can, I know all women deserve better! You deserve care that is specialised and as unique as you are. This has driven my passion to choose not to register as a midwife in the United Kingdom, but to offer a more holistic approach with private sessions as a sacred keeper of birth.
